Facebook Buys Oculus

Not exactly Dive related, but anyhow.... Facebook has purchased Oculus for 2 billion dollars. :'(

It isn't dead, but there are a loooooot of angry developers and early adopters out there that feel cheated in supporting what they thought was a small company's Kickstarter campaign that just turned out to be a Facebook acquisition.

Now is probably a good time for Dive and OpenDive to pick up some support from the developers who aren't fans of Facebook and are looking for a new VR platform to support.

Facebook has acquired Oculus, the company behind the Rift virtual reality headset.

The social network said on Monday that it had agreed to buy Oculus for $US2 billion in cash and 23.1 million shares of Facebook stock.

Oculus was founded by Palmer Luckey and Brendan Iribe in 2012 as an independent video game developer, but it attracted attention when its first product was revealed at E3 in 2013. The company's headset, called the Rift, uses stereoscopic displays to create a three-dimensional experience that users can interact with.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg told Reuters on Tuesday that he hoped the deal would help it build "the next great computing platform."

"This is a long-term bet on the future of computing," he said. "We feel very good about the decision we made today."

It's unclear how much time Facebook spent evaluating Oculus before deciding to buy the company. In 2014, Bloomberg reported that Twitter had passed on an acquisition offer from Facebook for $US2 billion because talks were "going nowhere."
