When were wrist watches invented?

Suddenly, a question popped into my head: when were wrist watches invented? I don’t know why exactly this one — maybe because I’ve long been interested in everyday objects with unusual histories. I started looking for information, and, as often happens, I came across something more than just a date. At first, I thought that wristwatches were an invention of the 20th century. However, everything turned out to be much more interesting. Women wore miniature watches on their wrists back in the 18th century! But the men’s version appeared much later — thanks to military needs. The article I found seemed very informative to me. It laid out everything in its place: from decorative women’s jewelry to functional devices on the battlefield. My question when were wrist watches invented became the starting point for me on a journey through the evolution of this item. Now, every time I put on my watch, I think not only about the time, but also about the rich history behind this familiar accessory.
