Fake it Until You Make It

It's seems that there has never been more sound advice offered. Upon first glance or the first time you hear it, depending upon which first you experience; the sheer notion of faking it, seems quite appalling. On the surface the statement appears to suggest being misleading or dishonest in attempts to achieve a desired result, but that's not necessarily the case. Now, let's dig deeper.

Not too far in the distant past, I was engaged in dialogue with a colleague about a subject I had been asked to teach. The subject was one that I knew quite a bit of surface information about, but not much more. After mulling things over with my colleague, his final piece of advice to me was "fake it until you make it". Stunned by the concept, or my understanding of the concept at the time, I simply shrugged, ignored his advice, and moved on.

It wasn't until sometime later, when I begin to rekindle my entrepreneurial spirit that this concept of faking it reappeared. The packaging was different, but the sentiment was exactly the same. While engaged in research, I found myself reading various books and articles on successful businesses. I also attended a workshop here and there, and simply played audience to individuals who were speaking about their knowledge of the follies and successes associated with pursuing dreams. All of the information I consumed during this time suggested or hinted at the same theme, "faking it until you make it". Now of course it wasn't phrased that way. It was dressed up in most exchanges, not as colloquial and casual as the advice my colleague offered, yet the same advice.

Like most things in life, there is nothing really new; it has all been done before in some form or another. Even if the concept you have is remotely new, the foundation that brings the concept to life is time tested and consistent. Most successful individuals will tell you in order to matriculate from one stage in life to the next, surround yourself with individuals who are where you want to be. The goals of including these individuals in your personal or social circles are multi-faceted. Initially they present themselves to be a great bank of knowledge, as they are where you hope to be. These become important contacts to bounce ideas off of, or simply seek direction. Additionally, they have been where you are, so they can help you avoid some of the pitfalls. These individuals also serve as sources for you to begin to model your behavior or your business practices after.

As I begin to reflect more on this subject, it became apparent that we have been taught to fake it our entire lives. Remember when your mother or father told you about one of their youthful experience in hopes that you wouldn't make similar mistakes. In essence, they were asking you to fake it. You were given the benefit of receiving knowledge without actually having to endure the experiences that gained your parents that same knowledge. If you followed your parent's advice, you were indeed faking it, as you were making your decisions based upon the knowledge of others.

If that scenario is not one that you can relate to maybe you have all heard of this one: Remember when you were taught to pray, and you were told that once you prayed, Bank Statement Template your prayer was already answered, and as a show of your faith, you were to act and behave as though whatever it was you prayed for, you received that moment.

It seems as though faking it has much to do with our success in the sense that it aligns our thoughts and actions. Some of us have ideas which we hope to achieve, but no direction with regard to reaching our intended destination. My advice to you would be to fake it.

Now don't read this and begin a string of lies to get where you want to be. That's not faking it, that's being dishonest. When I say fake it, I mean you should identify individuals who personify your ideas of success, and begin to model yourself after those individuals. Hone in on exactly what it is that makes those individuals successful. Is it their code of ethics, their gratitude, their persistence, or their consistency?

If you are anything like I was growing up, I turned my nosed at the thought of having a role model, simply because I was always taught to be me. It wasn't until I got older that I realized that maybe the concept of role models was taught to me incorrectly. We all have a role we are seeking to play in life, why not model yourself and your business with the understanding provided by those who have already paved the way.
