Simple paper Stereoscope

I designed a paper stereoscope
for less than 5usd that I like to share with you.
Works great!

You can switch easely from 3D to 2D view by fliping the lense.
The 2D Mode turned out be very convinient for reading and surfing!
The big Fresnel lense keeps your eyes in a relaxed position while
the smaler stereoscope lense enables you to watch any 3D side-by-side source.

-About 80° field of view (40° in 3D Mode)
-2D and 3D mode switchable
-Fits any Phone smaler / equal to Galaxy S3 137 x 70mm
-Minimum of 1280 x 720 is recomended for 3D view
-Focal lenght for both lenses is 120mm

this seems to work , i suspect the field of view is rather small with the large distance between the lenses and the display.

Yes, field of view is rather small in 3D Mode.
Not that immersive for gaming.
But i dont recommend to go any closer than 120mm to the display unsless you have a FullHD Phone.
You can already spot the pixels on that distance clearly (Samsung S3 1280 x 720 resolution).
It works great for 3D side-by-side pics thought using the free 3DSteroid APP

I like the 2D Mode better I must admit.
Feels like you have a 40" Screen in front of you!
Great for surfing an reading while you have fully acces to your touchscreen.

Hello maph007,

I have a question concerning the fresnel lens.
What is the position to build it into the goggle?

I like to use the goggle for FPV (First Person View) for a model aeroplane.

Put the Fresnel Lense as close to your nose as possible.
Then move your head until your eyes can see the display sharp and rest comfortably.
I need about 130mm to do so.

Btw: How do you get your stream on your Smartphone? Wifi Transmitter?

Hello maph007,

I am using free app "WiFiFPV" on a Samsung Galaxy S I9000 with Canogenmod 10.1.2 Android 4.2 (10 also OK, Android 4.1.2). Android 2.3.6 does not work.

Display on free app "FPVviewer" on a HTC EVO 3D Android 4.0.

Also using free app "GPS status and toolbox" to download GPS "Assist" data to shorten the fix time.

Hello maph007,

I forgot to mention, that I am using an Edimax BR-6228nS WLAN router with a Jagi antenna.
Please see: http://www.heise.de/netze/artikel/Die-0-Euro-Antenne-223704.html

The Edimax was selected for low power consumption of 1,5 W:
http://www.tpcdb.com/list.php?type=11
The power supply is a LiPo batterie with an 12V to 5V converter (modified car smartphone adapter).

In order to increase the distance I have selected wireless 11b.
At a frame rate 4fps this modulation works, but I have made no distance check up to now.

Hi guys I've been follwoing your interesting conversation.

I've already made a post about it on google+ and here on this board (but on the woring page^^).
For streaming I highly reccommend Tversity with its android app. Its free and very powerfull. Never had bad experience with it! I do use a ordinary Router that comes with a dsl contract.

Furthermore I designed a 2D application for the Dive. Its some sort of an extension. Unfortunately it is too heavy and hurts my face:D But I will work on the design (want to see a picture of it?).

Thanks to you I will give it another try. I just ordered the lenses and will do some experiments;)

This is the original post from google+:

How to watch 3D Movies with the Dive:

1. You need a side by side movie file. I just ripped it from my Hugo Cabret 3D bluray with a nice little porgramm called "Handbrake".
(You can also just download 3D Videos from youtube, but i didn't try that)

2. Ether you put the file on any stoprage of your device or you just stream it via a wlan connection. Because of the big size of 9GB and the fat32 partition I streamed it with the free "tversity" and its android app.

3. You start the movie with a media player. I prefer mxplayer.

4. Change the aspect ratio in the settings to avoid 3m tall people and egg-heads;) (changed it to: 2.39:1)

5. Pinch an zoom out to make the picture fit in the field of view. Otherwise you will just see the center of what's happening on the screen.
For my 5 inch Display I zoomed out to 60% -65% of the image.

6. Put on dive and adjust the lenses for a "sharp" view

7. Don't be disappointed! Although there is a really nice 3D effect the resolution of smartphone displays are note made for this kind of usage. With my 5 inch full HD Phone a had something between 480p and 720p, which is not enjoyable if you're that near in front of the image.

But judge for yourself and tell me about experiences!:)

Greetings VRDivers^^

I also ordered the lenses and eagerly now wait for them to arrive. I am also afraid the further the phone is away from the face the heavier it will feel. So I ordered two of the bookmark lenses. If my physical knowledge does not betray me, two times 12cm focal length right net to each other should become 6cm focal length.
I was already thinking about using a mirror and mount the phone on your head.
To jplefox: Sure, we (at least me) would love to see your design (or a picture of it).
maph007's stereoviewer was very inspiring and I totally forgot how cool things you can build out of paper (and the effort is so much lower than using a 3D printer).

Cheers,
ulno

Hi, did any of you try the approach posted by the last person, of placing two lenses next to each other to decrease focal distance and thus the size of the final product? Sounds like a great idea and I'm tempted to try it. How about trying it with the 3d lenses as well?

Cheers!
